More about organ supplements

If you’re in the animal-based or carnivore game, you’re probably a nose-to-tail eater, which means you have probably heard of organ supplements.

Ancestral Supplements and Heart & Soil Supplements are two brands trailblazing the field by providing high-quality organ supplements to the world.

What are organ supplements?

When I transitioned over to a carnivore/animal-based diet and started learning about this way of eating, I heard all the buzz about organ meats. They’re full of nutrients and packed with health benefits.

But when I thought about preparing them, cooking them, and eating them, I was a bit intimidated.

Enter: organ supplements.

Individual organs – usually beef organs – are desiccated (all of the moisture is removed and they’re dried out) and placed into capsules for nearly effortless consumption.

The idea behind supplementing with organs is like supports like, meaning if one of the organs in your body is weak or has a deficiency, that same organ from a happy, pasture-raised, grass-fed cow should, in theory, help strengthen that weak organ.

For example, if you come down with a lot of respiratory infections, Beef Lung may be a good choice for you. Or if you have urinary troubles, Beef Kidney may work well.

Ancestral Supplements vs. Heart & Soil Supplements: How Do You Choose?

At first glance, I couldn’t really tell the difference between Ancestral Supplements and Heart & Soil Supplements offerings. But over the past few months, I communicated with both brands, looked deeper into their offerings, and tried out multiple products.

I will be discussing both brands using the following five categories to help you decide which brand best fits your needs.

  • Intention behind use
  • Sourcing and product quality
  • Customer service
  • Where you’re located
  • Cost

Intention behind use

When I dove into the offerings of both brands, it appears that Ancestral Supplements focuses on targeted support and Heart & Soil Supplements focuses on organ blends.

For instance, take a closer look at their offerings. For the blends, I listed out which individual organs the product consists of.

Here is a list of Ancestral Supplements full product line:

  • Grass-fed Beef Organs: Liver, Heart, Kidney, Spleen, Pancreas
  • Grass-fed Beef Liver
  • Grass-fed Beef Heart
  • Grass-fed Beef Thyroid
  • Grass-fed Beef Pancreas
  • Grass-fed Beef Spleen
  • Grass-fed Bone and Marrow: Whole Bone Extract (Bone Matrix, Bone Marrow, Cartilage)
  • Grass-fed Thymus
  • Grass-fed Beef Brain
  • Grass-fed Beef Kidney
  • Grass-fed Beef Trachea
  • Grass-fed Beef Adrenal Cortex with Liver: Adrenal Cortex, Liver
  • Grass-fed Intestines (with Tripe): Intestines, Tripe/Stomach
  • Grass-Fed Gallbladder with Ox Bile & Liver: Gallbladder, Ox Bile, Liver
  • Grass-fed Lung with Liver: Lung, Liver
  • Grass-fed Beef Tallow
  • Grass-fed “Living” Collagen
  • Grass-fed Colostrum
  • Male Optimization Formula with Organs (MOFO): Testicle, Prostate, Heart, Liver, Bone Marrow
  • Female Enhancement Mixture with Mammary (FEMM): Ovary, Uterus, Mammary, Liver, Bone Marrow
  • Grass-fed Beef Prostate
  • Grass-fed Beef Eye
  • Wild Caught Fish Eggs
  • Grass-fed Pure Marrow
  • Grass-fed Living Bone
  • Blood Vitality: Blood, Liver, Spleen
  • Grass-fed Placenta

Here is a list of Heart and Soil Supplements full product line:

  • Beef Organs: Liver, Heart, Kidney, Pancreas, Spleen
  • Firestarter: Suet
  • Bone Marrow & Liver: Liver, Bone Marrow
  • Lifeblood: Blood Spleen, Liver

  • Bone Matrix: Whole Bone Matrix
  • Immunomilk: Colostrum
  • Whole Package: Testicle, Liver, Blood
  • Her Package: Uterus, Ovaries, Fallopian Tubes, Liver, Kidney

If you pay close attention to the products and the ingredients, you’ll notice that, for example, Heart & Soil Supplements Histamine & Immune product includes thymus, lung, kidney, spleen, and liver, whereas Ancestral Supplements sells all of those organs individually in separate products.

Targeted support

If you’re looking for targeted support (i.e. there is a specific organ in your body that you know is weak or has a deficiency), Ancestral Supplements may be a good option for you. I personally like the control that comes with a targeted approach.

I have a bunch of Ancestral Supplements products (Liver, Bone and Marrow, Living Bone, Wild Caught Fish Eggs, Beef Tallow) and I don’t take the same exact spread every single day. My body speaks and tells me what it wants on a given day.

For example, on days I eat raw dairy, I don’t take the Living Bone. It’s nice to have separate products and be able to do this as it feels intuitive to me.

These are the Ancestral Supplements products I always have on hand:

Grass-Fed Beef Liver

(rich in B12, vitamin A, folate, riboflavin, iron, copper, and choline)

Blends

If you’re more of a “blend” person, are looking to target a symptom or overall issue (digestive discomfort, immune system weakness, swelling, etc.), or if you like variety, Heart & Soil Supplements may be more up your alley.

Ancestral Supplements could also be used in this case (they offer some blends as well, such as MOFO, Beef Organs, and Blood Vitality). But if you’re looking to consume a wide variety of certain organs, Heart & Soil Supplements may be more cost-effective.

For example, Heart & Soil Supplements Gut & Digestion blend has Tripe/Stomach, Intestines, Pancreas, Liver, and Bone Marrow. You would have to take four Ancestral Supplements products – Grass-Fed Intestines with Tripe, Pancreas, Liver, and Bone and Marrow – to consume those same organs.

However, it’s important to note that although you get more organ variety with the blends, you won’t get as concentrated of an amount of each organ as you would with the individual products.

I use Heart & Soil Supplements Histamine & Immune blend as I have had lifelong problems with edema and bloating. Whenever I’m feeling puffy, I take some H&I, and then I back off when my body tells me I no longer need it.

Histamine & Immune

(Thymus, Lung, Kidney, Spleen, Liver – I use for bloating & edema)

Sourcing and product quality

Both Ancestral Supplements and Heart & Soil Supplements source from New Zealand farms and support regenerative farming practices.

The organs from both brands are also 100% grass-fed and grass-finished.

Heart & Soil Supplements has a page on their website that explains more about their sourcing, and Ancestral Supplements touches upon it on their Amazon page for their Beef Liver product under ‘About this item’.

Another cool thing about both of these brands is that their capsule is only one ingredient: gelatin.

There is one exception to this: Ancestral Supplement’s Bone and Marrow product. The ‘Other Ingredients’ listed on the Bone and Marrow product are Gelatin, Organic Rice Concentrate, and Silica. I’m not sure if this is a labeling error or perhaps necessary for the formulation, but given how intentional Brian is with his products, I’m sure there is a reason for it.

In regards to sourcing, I don’t think you can go wrong with either brand.

Customer service

When it comes to taking care of their customers, both brands – based on my experience directly working with them – go above and beyond.

I reached out to Brian Johnson, owner of Ancestral Supplements, with some questions about fertility. He responded quickly with an impressively thorough email that included product recommendations, research, and even some other suggestions around lifestyle choices that he thought would help. He was present with me throughout our entire email exchange. I could tell he read through my questions in detail, understood what I was asking, and really tried to help.

I had a similar experience with Paul Saladino, owner of Heart & Soil Supplements. I sent over some questions about carbohydrates, and he reached out personally with a thorough response. He also took the time and energy to try to understand where I was coming from and help me.

I have also communicated with the support teams for both brands regarding product questions, affiliate program questions, and other things. I worked with Vincent from Ancestral Supplements and Melanie from Heart & Soil Supplements, and both of them were wonderful!

Both tribes went above and beyond with quick, thorough emails that addressed everything I was asking for (and then some).

When it comes to customer service, both tribes produce some stellar vibes.

Where you’re located

I reached out to both brands to confirm which countries they ship their products to.

Heart & Soil Supplements ships to the United States and Canada.

Ancestral Supplements also ships to the United States and Canada, along with most international countries if you purchase directly from their online store.

According to Brian, they are “working hard to expand international Amazon presence to more conveniently and affordably deliver these nourishing foods across the globe.”

I wouldn’t be surprised if Heart & Soil Supplements isn’t far behind, as the company just reached its first year in business, and their growth in just a year’s time has been massive and impressive.

For now, if you’re in the United States and Canada, you can have your pick of either brand. If you’re located outside of the United States or Canada, Ancestral Supplements is the way to go.

Cost

It’s hard to do an apples-to-apples cost comparison as Ancestral Supplements and Heart & Soil Supplements product offerings are quite different. But I was able to do a side-by-side of a few of their products that are similar. Here is a cost comparison of those products:

Ancestral Supplements Beef Organs ($48) vs. Heart & Soil’s Beef Organs ($50)

Ancestral Supplements MOFO ($62) vs. Heart & Soil’s Whole Package ($68)

Ancestral Supplements Beef Tallow ($28) vs. Heart & Soil’s Firestarter ($28)

Ancestral Supplements Living Bone ($30) vs. Heart & Soil’s Bone Matrix ($32)

Note: I used the prices listed on Amazon for Ancestral Supplements, and for Heart & Soil, I used the prices listed on their website.

Overall, dollar for dollar, Ancestral Supplements is a bit cheaper. By how much depends on the products you’re comparing. For example, based on the above prices, MOFO is $6 cheaper than Whole Package, but Beef Tallow and Firestarter are the same price.

Both Ancestral Supplements and Heart & Soil Supplements have a Subscribe & Save option on their website that knocks 10% off the price.

Final thoughts

TL; DR

At the end of the day, you really can’t go wrong with either brand.

Both are top-notch when it comes to customer service, sourcing, and product quality.

Ancestral Supplements is slightly cheaper generally speaking, but it depends on what products you’re comparing.

I would recommend Ancestral Supplements if you’re looking for targeted support. If you’re looking for a unique blend or for a cost-effective way to get a variety of certain organs, you may want to go with Heart & Soil Supplements.

Both Ancestral Supplements and Heart & Soil Supplements ship to the United States and Canada. Ancestral Supplements also ships to most international countries if you purchase directly from their online store.

I hope this guide was helpful to you. If you choose either brand, you’ll be making a solid choice. It all comes down to what exactly you’re looking for.
